Room to Grow: Expanded Beginner Terrain

Windham Mountain, Windham, NY (September 1, 2013) - Everyone has to start somewhere, and Windham Mountain Resort continues to enhance the beginner experience. After two years of development, the Resort will open the brand new Whisper Run beginner area for the 2013-14 winter season.

Guests will see the difference the moment they arrive: Whisper Run is two acres of beginner terrain with two conveyor lifts in front of the base lodge. The area is specifically suited for first-timers and beginners with a very slight incline that allows skiers and riders to control their speed while learning the basics. Snowmaking covers the entire beginner area to ensure its availability throughout the winter season.

“Windham Mountain Resort has always been known as a family-friendly mountain. The base area expansion was developed with that in mind. We hope that it will attract new skiers and riders and provide them with plenty of room to grow and to fall in love with the sport,” said Chip Seamans, president and general manager.

The new beginner area doubles the amount of beginner terrain previously offered by the Resort. The change is welcome one for the 300 Snow Sports instructors who teach group and private lessons throughout the winter season.

“What greater reward could you have as a skier or rider than to see new kids and adults on an area that is designed just for them?” said snow sports director Franz Krickl. “Not only will it functionally help first timers, but as guests approach the ski area it will also add to their perspective of Windham Mountain Resort as a truly great place to learn.”

Ski and snowboard instructors see the beginner terrain as a tool in the teaching process, as it helps to combat fear that can get in the way of learning. They plan to modify their teaching style to embrace the beginner area in the coming years, resulting in better and faster skill development during lessons and a solid foundation from first time skiers and riders.
