Junior Snow Sports programs at Windham Mountain

A great way for kids to improve skills and make friends

Our experienced instructors will teach kids new skills and advance their skiing ability, preparing them to safely compete in races. Your children will acquire the necessary techniques to become great! Mini Mountaineers is our youngest racing team for skiers and riders, beginning with children as young as 5 years old. Children 18 and under are eligible for enrollment in the junior programs and will be taught the latest racing techniques. Racing begins in December. Mini Mountaineers (ages 5&6) & Mountaineers (ages 7+)

The 14-week programs start on December 10th, 2016. The Mini Mountaineers program, for ages 5 and 6, introduces our youngest participants to the Junior Program.

Mountaineers, for ages 7-12, focuses on the fundamental skills that serve as building blocks for success at a later age, when your child can choose a more specific program.

Racing

Alpine Competition (ages 10-19)

This is a 14-week program for Juniors 18 and under. Learn the latest racing techniques from an award-winning professional coaching staff. Intensive concentration in skills acquisition as well as specific training in Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G. Racers compete in USSA sanctioned events regionally and statewide. Must be members of USSA and NYSSRA. Age groups are U12 – ages 10-11, U14 – ages 12-13, U16 – ages 14-15, U18 – ages 16-17 and U19 – ages 16-19. Offered as a full day program only.

The Alpine Competition groups will also have early morning training frequently throughout the season. Mid-Week Training opportunities are available. Options range from single day to full season. Contact racefactory@windhammountain.com for details.

Learn the latest racing techniques from our award winning coaching staff. The program provides training in Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G disciplines, plus directed free skiing in all snows and terrain. Windham’s racing program is affiliated with the United States Ski and Snowboard Association and the New York State Ski Racing Association.

Mini World Cup (ages 6-15)

A race training program that focuses on the enjoyment of the sport, play, and the gradual development of skiing and racing skills in an environment that promotes lifelong participation in the sport – as well as preparation for the Alpine Competition program. Windham offers a four race series at home for these young skiers.

The Mini World Cup program is divided into five age categories: U8 – ages 6-7, U10 – ages 8-9, U12 – ages 10-11, U14 – ages 12-13 and U16 – ages 14-15. Offered as a full day program only. Requirements: must be able to ski intermediate terrain comfortably. Must be able to ride lifts without an adult.

Freestyle (Ages 6+)

Learn to ski the bumps, hit the jumps, and free-ski like the pros. Coaches combine fun and challenge to develop the techniques needed to pull off freestyle maneuvers in both disciplines. The Windham Mountain Freestyle Program is affiliated with the United States Ski and Snowboard Associations (USSA & USASA).

Snowboarding

This 14-week program integrates physical skill development and safety awareness with a great opportunity to make new friends. The Mountain Riders program focuses on stance and turn shapes, with the opportunity to develop and master freestyle, alpine and combined skills. The Competition program further develops the skills of a rider who wants to compete in local and regional competitions.

Mini Riders Program: ages 5-6

Introducing the fundamentals of snowboarding at an early age. Riders of this ages will learn the basics of snowboarding – stance, mechanics of turning, linked turns. Safety and fun will be stressed. Independence in equipment use will be encouraged.
This program will be available for half-day option only. Program participants should have previous experience on a snowboard.

Mountain Riders Program: ages 7-16

Developing the skills of a rider who has previously learned the fundamentals of snowboarding. The mountain rider will build a strong foundation of stance and various turn shapes, allowing for the mastery of an all mountain rider. Participants will be introduced to and given opportunity to develop and master freestyle, alpine and combined skills. Safety, fun and learning will be stressed. Independence in equipment use and care will be encouraged. Participants’ ability on a snowboard will determine the level group they will be placed in.

This program will be available for both half day and full day options. Program participants should have previous experience on a snowboard.

Competition Program: ages 7-16

Developing the skills of a rider who desires to compete in local and regional competitions. The competitor will build a strong foundation of stance and various trun shapes, allowing for the mastery of an all mountain rider. The basics of freestyle, alpine and combined skills will be introduced, developed and mastered by participants. Safety, fun, learning and good sportsmanship will be stressed. Independent use and care will be encouraged.

Participants will be grouped by the following age categories: Ruggie (7 and under*); Grommet (8-9); Menehue (10-11); Breaker (12-13); Youth (14-16). Ruggies through Menehues will be coached to grow maturity and independence through attending local competitions and regional events help at Windham Mountain. Breakers and above will be provided a coach at USASA events held at mountains within the regional series.

This program will be available in full day only/ Participants must have previous experience on a snowboard.

*Consideration will be given to riders under the age of seven who have been assessed by a qualified coach to have the skills necessary for this program

Junior Instructor (Ages 13+)

This program is focused on youngsters ages 13 and up who would like to become Windham Mountain Snow Sports instructors. It’s also great for those who simply want to be a better skier or rider. This 14-week, full-day program, beginning December 2016 is open to skiers and snowboarders of at least “intermediate” capabilities. Participants learn from the pros how to teach all levels, from beginner to expert. And they’ll be able to take advantage of the most talented coaches available.
