Windham Mountain Snow Sports School offers two learning styles to suit your ability.

The Beginner Lesson Program is catered to the skier/rider who has some experience on the snow and can benefit from a group lesson setting. The Group Lesson is 1 hour and 45 minutes of instruction for beginner groups of up to 8 people. Start times are at 10:00am or 1:15pm.

The First Timer Lesson Program is meant for the new skier/rider to learn at your own pace as the instructors guide you through the Open Learning Environment Program, and is available on weekends and holidays.

The Open Learning Environment (OLE) Program for First Timer Skiers and Riders

Learn at your own pace. See results fast! Skiing and riding are dynamic and so is our program. We get you moving right from the start. Quickly develop a feel for the snow while learning effective skiing and riding strategies. Our innovative Open Learning Environment Program will get you going with confidence and success.

  • No waiting for your lesson to start. Available on weekends and holidays, you can begin any time between 10am and 2:15pm, and continue until 4:00pm.
  • Progress at your own pace as our specially trained instructors guide you through the learning experience.
  • Need to take a break? Feel free! And when you return, pick up where you left off.

About the OLE Program:

The Open Learning Environment Program is a unique and extraordinarily effective way to learn to ski and ride. It is based on the understanding that skiing and riding are fundamentally open skills. As such, the most effective learning takes place in an open learning environment. Incorporating the latest sports research on open versus closed skill development, the OLE Program utilizes the Experiential Learning Model of Prof. David A. Kolb, Educational Theorist, and importantly, integrates the open learning environment with zone-based teaching. These elements allow students to move through the various performance zones as their personal skiing and riding skills and their comfort with varying terrain develop. The program also uses a simple, non-technical approach that accelerates the learner’s skill development by focusing on sensation and outcome rather than complex descriptions of what to do. You learn to ski and ride by actually skiing and riding!

Windham Mountain Resort’s Open Learning Environment Program was put together by members of the Snow Sports School staff. The concepts of the OLE Program are based on research by Joan Heaton and Jim Vigani involving the incorporation of open skill learning into modern ski teaching methodologies. Bruce Meirowitz has concurrently adapted the elements of open skill learning into the snowboard teaching methodologies. Tony Sturnolo has been instrumental in organizing and coordinating the Zone-teaching logistics.
